Adults with mild and moderate level of intellectual disabilities and those belonging to other marginalized social groups.
Selection of Beneficiaries
Adults with mild and moderate level of intellectual disabilities and those belonging to other marginalized social groups will create the inclusive atmosphere. This will help the people with intellectual disabilities to learn livelihood skills, societal norms and values which will help them to be socially accepted. On the other hand the marginalized non-disabled will also get job opportunities and acceptance in the village.
Sristi Village project now has a firm ground to work from! On the 30th May, 2014, Sristi Foundation acquired 9 acres of beautiful cultivation land near Kunamangalam village in Tamil Nadu, 30km west of Pondicherry city. Along with architectural and Permaculture experts, the land is now being surveyed and planned for building the basic infrastructure for his village. The final target would be around 30 acres of land for 150 villagers, so that self-sustainability can be maintained in the long run.
Constructing Basic Infrastructure
Five simple eco-friendly, traditional south Indian huts will be constructed with traditional building materials to accommodate the beneficiaries in addition to an administration block. The village will be designed eco-friendly and barrier free. Persons with intellectual disabilities and non-disabled persons will be involved to design and create their own huts.
Depending on the individual’s skills, abilities and interests, in the first year beneficiaries will be trained in dairy farm, organic vegetable and fruits farming. Later, the plan is to expand to agricultural cultivation, gardening, bakery, handicraft, carpentering etc. Activities will be organized involving the neighborhood community and volunteers.
Each villager will work according to his/her individual potential in an inclusive environment within the village.
In the first year we are planning to initiate the following employment opportunities:
• Organic vegetable garden, where we grow all kinds of vegetables for the village community
• Dairy Farm, where we create milk products (cheese, yoghurt etc) from cow and milk.
• Agriculture fields, where we grow coconut, fruits, banana, etc.
Periodically we will organize workshops and seminars, inviting experts with different interests ranging from farming, new technologies, etc.
Villagers will live in the group homes where 5 to 6 villagers live together in a family atmosphere. Everyone at the Village will work, live, and learn together; meaningful relationships and friendships will abound.
